Treatment Scout Website Helps Families Find & Choose Mental Illness Treatment Facility

Helena, MT – The Family Support Foundation for Mental Illness is pleased to announce the launch of the Treatment Scout website.  The website, which was envisioned by Matt Kuntz of the National Alliance on Mental Illness for Montana (NAMI Montana), provides valuable information for people needing to make major treatment decisions about their mental health issues.

Jonathan Foxman, Executive Director of the Family Support Foundation for Mental Illness says that the site will be of tremendous help to a great many families:

“The Family Support Foundation for Mental Illness is proud to support the Treatment Scout website, an innovative tool that helps individuals and families coping with mental illness locate the right treatment facilities for their needs,” says Foxman. “Too often, even locating treatment facilities proves difficult, and learning the first hand experiences of others has simply never been possible. Treatment Scout is changing that, which is a huge step forward.”

NAMI Montana Executive Director Matt Kuntz was inspired to create the website because of the many challenges he and his staff faced trying to help families find and choose between treatment centers. NAMI Montana offers support, education, and advocacy for individuals and their families who live with mental illness.

“Inpatient treatment can cost between $20,000 and $60,000 per month or more with much of that paid out of pocket. The decision of which treatment center to attend is not only expensive, but it can truly mean life or death for themselves or a loved one,” Kuntz explains. “It was frustrating how little information was available to help them make that critical decision, especially from the perspective of people who had actually experienced the care either themselves or for a loved one.”

Treatment Scout shows people possible treatment locations along with reviews from patients who’ve received treatment at the location, as well as reviews from families or loved ones of people who received treatment there. Reviews from clinicians or medical navigators, such as NAMI Montana staff, who have served people who’ve received treatment there, are also encouraged.

The site has also been expanded to include brain health treatments that are more expensive and intensive than traditional outpatient treatments; as a result people can find information about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Ketamine treatment for depression, and electroconvulsant therapy (ECT).

Treatment Scout is being hosted by FSFMI as part of their services to families affected by mental illness.  It has also been helped along by donations from NAMI Helena and NAMI Bozeman.

“This is a dream come true that will change the lives of so many people,” Matt Kuntz declares. “We’re up and running, and thankful for all the support we can get.”
